Landscape
Parliament House is surrounded by 23 hectares of landscape designed to
blend in with the architecture of the building. Native tree and shrubs,
many of which are indigenous to the region, border the perimeter area
through which visitors are welcome to take a leisurely stroll.
The Formal Gardens, on the eastern outer perimeter, have trimmed hedges,
pergolas, and a variety of annuals and perennials. The combination of
English and French formal gardens reflects the British and European influence
on Australia.

Floriade
Complementing the outdoor landscaping of Parliament House are 17 internal
courtyard gardens located in the private areas of the building. Normally
restricted to Members of Parliament, parliamentary staff and building
occupants, these gardens are opened once a year in celebration of Floriade
(NB: tours dependent upon Security considerations).
On non-sitting days, garden tours, led by professional gardeners or guides,
take members of the public on twice-daily tours through the courtyards.
Participants are welcome to take photographs, learn about the courtyards'
designs and plant life, and pick up handy tips from the gardeners.
On sitting days, guides take visitors to view four courtyards, and into
the formal and native gardens of Parliament House. The stunning Formal
Gardens were designed to embrace elements from both English and French
formal gardens. The native gardens, which cover 9 hectares around the
external landscape areas, surround the Formal Gardens.
