Chapter 5 - Officers
of the Senate:
Parliamentary administration
Title and precedence
of President
While in office the President is entitled to the title “Honourable”.
When the President leaves office, the practice is that the title may be
retained only if authorised by the monarch.
Since 1975, the Presiding Officers of the two Houses have ranked in
precedence after the Prime Minister, and the relative precedence of the
President and the Speaker is determined by date of appointment. If the
President and Speaker are appointed on the same day, the President takes
precedence. The history of the question of precedence is in ASP, 6th
ed., at pp 187-9.
