Recommendations
Recommendation 1
3.1 The committee recommends that
proposed paragraphs 474.29A(1)(b) and (c) be amended so that the phrase
'counsels or incites suicide' reads 'counsels or incites another person to
commit or attempt to commit suicide'.
Recommendation 2
3.1 The committee recommends that the
Bill be amended to insert a requirement that, as soon as practicable after the end of 12 months from the date of the Bill's commencement, the Attorney-General must cause to
be laid before each House of Parliament a comprehensive report on the operation of proposed
subsections 474.29A(3)
and (4).
Recommendation 3
3.2 Subject to the preceding
recommendations, the committee recommends that the Senate pass the Bill.
Recommendation 4
3.3 The committee supports and calls
for the implementation of additional broader research, strategies, resourcing
and policy initiatives by the Federal Government and state/territory
governments in order to address jointly and consistently issues relating to
suicide in Australia.
