Information about the inquiry

On 11 May 2005, the Senate referred the provisions of the above Bill to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 9 August 2005.

The Bill will amend the Copyright Act 1968 (the Copyright Act) to provide for film directors to be joint copyright owners of their films, along with producers, for the purposes of the retransmission statutory licence in Part VC of the Copyright Act. This will allow directors to share in remuneration for the retransmission of films included in free-to-air broadcasts.

Submissions are called for by 3 June 2005. Submissions become Committee documents and are only made public after a decision by the Committee. Unauthorised release of submissions is not covered by parliamentary privilege. Further assistance can be obtained by phoning the secretariat on (02) 6277 3560.
