Human Rights Legislation Ammendment Bill (No. 2)

STATEMENT OF SENATOR COONEY

1.1 I agree generally with the thrust of Senator Mc Kiernan's report.

1.2 There is an urgent and ever growing need for conventions, laws, protocols and practices to underpin what is more and more becoming a world community.

1.3 People see that the international economy is an increasingly powerful force. There needs to be a matching growth of social legal and cultural forces to ensure that all have an authentic opportunity of living a life with all the attributes of a true citizen.

1.4 A basic requirement for this to happen is that our own society and those around the World be informed with the principles and spirit of human rights. This legislation blunts the movements towards these goals and should be regenerated.

Senator Barney Cooney

Senator for Victoria
