My submission is regarding the principle of the
approach to dealing with invasive species.
Rather than dealing with individual species, a more
effective approach is to tackle the problem from the perspective of achieving
healthy ecosystems.
The fundamental problem with dealing on a 'species
by species' basis is that the niche created by the removal of one invasive
species can be colonised by others, often more problematic (eg Lantana may
be replaced by Anredera).
I believe the problems should be managed on a
regional basis (perhaps by Catchment Management Authorities).
With this approach, ecosystems are managed for
sustainable biodiversity outcomes by treating all invasive problems in a
coordinated way.
It requires careful and strategic planning at a
local/regional level and sound coordination at a national level.
Regional authorities such as CMA's would determine
priorities for the area based on local consultation and national guidelines.
They would coordinate on-the-ground works, maintenance and awareness
programs.
As a practitioner of such work with many years'
experience, I hope you will appreciate that this principle of approach to
dealing with invasive species is the most efficacious for the long-term health
of Australia's environment.
I look forward to the committee's
findings.
