Subject: ENQUIRY INTO TELECOM NETWORK
FROM THE COMMUTER COUNCIL OF NSW
CHAIRMANS ADDRESS
4 Batley Street
Gosford NSW 2250
16/8/2002
The Commuter Council of NSW was formed in 1972 and comprises a
representative from each commuter association in NSW,and has met monthly since
then, and aims to identify and represent the needs and wishes of NSW
commuters.
It wishes to put to your inquiry that the performance of the
network is most important during disasters such a fire, flood, cyclone
earthquake etc.
People need access to the network during disasters more than
any other time.
It is therefore important that the network should have
sufficient capacity to allow use during these periods so that commuters, who may
be trapped away from their families, can at least communicate with
them.
Another important point is that all equipment should be
duplicated with transmission circuits backed up by alternate
routes.
It is also essential that the vehicles used by Telstra service
personel should be equipped with a simple 2 way radio system so that field staff
can communicate with one another and not rely on mobilnet or trunk radios which
although very good, nevertheless can become congested and unworkable during
disasters.
Yours faithfully
Kevin Parish
