Subject:
rural difficulties again!
Jeannette,
I wrote to you some months ago regarding
difficulties I was having in the rural areas of Alice Springs
(I can
forward details if you wish).
I'm afraid the more I hear about the
forthcoming enquiry into Telstra's rural service delivery the more determined
I am to put in a personal submission.
You may recall my difficulties
started when I asked Telstra to reconnect a line that had lapsed to my
property. After turning up to connect it they discovered that there were no
copper pairs left in our entire rural subdivision. They then went away and
some weeks later had managed to reconnect a line
(me thinking they had laid
new line in and thus more copper pairs were now available.)
Being a
small business operator I have recently decided I require broadband internet.
After discovering the outrageous fact that Telstra would charge me over $1,000
to install a dish that is installed FREE to city customers, I went to ozemail
to have an ADSL system put in for a fraction of the cost, their reply is
below.
It appears Telstra is still a long way off the government's
required service levels for the bush.

Dear OzEdsl
applicant,
Unfortunately, your application for OzEdsl has been
unsuccessful. Your line
has been deemed unsuitable for ADSL for the
following reason/s:
Reason:
Your phone line is on a RIM
system
A RIM system is a different way of installing a phone line to an
area. It is
done digitally to a central point within the area. This means
that from your
residence there are no copper phone lines between yourself
and your local
telephone exchange. This is a necessary requirement to for
the ADSL
Broadband service.
It might be necessary to discuss having
a full copper pair installed for
your phone service.
