Subject: Re Phone service
To Whom it may concern,
I wish to lodge a submission in regards to the inadequacy of my current phone service. I live at lot 1 Mount view rd Mount View which is about 14 klms from the Cessnock exchange in N.S.W.
I have lived at my current location for nearly 10 years and up until last August when I put on a second line I thought my service was adequate. The new service was because I had just started a business as a Tour Operator and needed the extra phone line to meet the N.S.W dept of Transport criteria for my accreditation. My new service took twice as long to install as they said and  was connected to a RAM 8 system at that stage I had no idea what that was but I soon found out. As both my lines run off the same RAM 8 if there is ever a problem with this unit both my lines are out of action. I would also like to pint out that I do not have any mobile service so to report any problems I have to drive 5 klms to report it.
It appears that because my service is so far from the exchange this RAM 8 needs a battery back up  somewhere between the unit and the exchange they seem to record where they put the RAM 8 s but the service personnel state that there are hundreds in my area and no record of the battery locations has ever been kept. Thus if there is a problem they could look at hundreds of batteries not knowing which one is attached to which RAM 8 .  My phone service has since this RAM 8 was installed continually cut in and out and unless I actually go to use the phone I do not know if it is working or not. On good Friday this year my phone cut out as I rely on the service for bookings and Easter being the busy period I drove into Cessnock and reported the fault I was told I would have to wait till Tuesday as no one was rostered on till then. I was looking at losing potentially $2000.00 in lost bookings. My service cut in and out all over that weekend and I have no idea of the work that I lost due to the problem. Telstra have looked at the problem but when they do it is working again and as they say if its not broken then we cant fix it. My phone still today cuts in and out but I don't know how many times it happens as unless I go to use it I wouldn't even be aware it is not working. This lack of sufficient services into this area is costing me money and if I had mobile service I would not even bother with a land line. I ring and complain but as the technicians say if its working when we get there we cant find the problem therefore we cant fix it. Prior to this new service I had virtually no problems with my phone service but with all the increase in building in this area and with the internet the system will only get slower and slower. My computer is currently running at 28.8bps and never gets any faster I should probably send this submission by Aust post as it will get there faster.
I hope this is of some assistance and I hope you can get this problem for us who live in remote areas fixed
Thanking you
