Subject: Inquiry into the Australian Telecommunications Network

I am responding to your inquiry into broadband services.

The current pricing structure where service is capped at 3gig by the two seemingly main providers where additional megabytes are charged at exorbitant rates by Telstra or being throttled to 28.8kbps modem speed by Optus could hardly be called a step forward and don’t inspire the average Australian to connect to the internet via broadband as they would in other developed countries with affordable connections such as the UK or the US , yes the ordinary internet user has the opportunity to view their pricing plans and has every reason to feel let down. Why is Australia being left behind in affordable broadband access to all Australians is it the need for profit in Telstra’s case so it can be sold off to the highest bidder, as complaints to the ACC or the TIO seem to go unheard and seems to favor the ISP? So much for the “clever” country we are being left behind by greed or total or total mismanagement as even taking exchange rates into account overseas connection fees are by far cheaper and services are not as restricted as in Australia.

Until the government takes firm action on price fixing this will remain a country of 56k modem users.
