Subject: Re: Inquiry into competition in broadband services
Overall I am fairly happy with my Telstra ADSL Broadband Connection.
Key impediments to the broad uptake of broadband from most important to least important are

Price
I pay $94.95 per month. It's too much and the price needs to be $50.00. End of story!
This issue by far outweighs the rest of the issues.

Download Limits
I have a 3GB limit which is adequate for me at the moment.
This limit does act as an impediment to new creative uses such as
Downloading rental videos from an online video store
Virtual hard disk drive from a online data storage company
Hosting your own website.
I actually take advantage of Telstra's "Free Sites" in which they don't measure downloaded data.
I view mainly the NRL league sites as we live in NSW but support Brisbane and frequently watch the untelevised in NSW games.
This may be a good model to use where the ADSL provider such as Telstra provides unmonitored downloads from other vendors to allow users to gain services. eg Blockbuster Video Online site. Maybe the ADSL supplier gets a commission from the vendor for this service.
An unlimited download limit would be great but I think we would have some users hogging the pipe!

Speed
My plan has a 512Kb download speed and this limits the resolution that I can watch the streaming content mentioned above to about 320x240.
The resolution I would like is 640x480, so a download speed of 2Mbps would be needed.
Apart from streaming video the speed I receive is adequate but the faster it becomes the happier I am.

Availability
Not a problem for me as I am a city dweller who also happens to live near an exchange so ADSL is available.
It is a problem for customers who live in the bush and this would be an impediment for wide adoption of broadband.
There is no simple/cost effective solution to this problem at the moment for both the broadband provider or the customer

In conclusion
Cheaper
More Data
Faster
Available everywhere.

By making the connection or pipe to the world essentially free of charge and fast you open up a new opportunities for creative uses of the medium.
Last year I worked with an innovative company called "Fluffy Spider Technologies" brainstorming new ideas on how to leverage the internet and broadband links. The ideas we came up with where not yet achievable by the above issue.
