Inquiry into the trafficking of women for sexual servitude

Supplementary Inquiry into the trafficking of women for sexual servitude

In June 2004, the Committee tabled its report on the trafficking of women for sexual servitude. During the course of the inquiry the government introduced its National Action Plan to combat the trade, which included a range of measures such as legislative review across all Australian jurisdictions; the creation of an Australian Federal Police Transnational Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking Team; improved arrangements for cooperation between relevant Commonwealth agencies; and a new victim support system.

At the time the Committee reported, it was too early to assess the effectiveness of these reforms.

However, with 12 months since the report; the completion of the legislative review; and the subsequent introduction of the Criminal Code Amendment (Trafficking in Persons Offences) Bill 2004, it is timely to reassess the situation.

Accordingly, the Committee invited officers of the Australian Crime Commission, the Attorney-General's Department and the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs to update the Committee on progress.
