FERGUSON, Senator the Honourable Alan Baird

Born 16.9.1943, Maitland, South Australia.

Educated at Weetulta Rural School; Scotch College, Adelaide.

Prior to entering Parliament, Senator Ferguson was a farmer on Yorke Peninsula in rural South Australia from 1960 to 1985, and then worked as an insurance consultant from 1985 to 1992.

Senator Ferguson was chosen by the South Australian Parliament to fill a casual vacancy in the Senate on 26 May 1992. He was subsequently elected in 1993 and at the 1998 and 2004 elections. He was Chairman of the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade from 1999 and a member of that committee from 1997.

Senator Ferguson was elected President of the Senate on 14 August 2007.
