AUSTRALIAN LABOR
PARTY
The Australian Labor Party has developed a range of policies
to help address the effects climate change, with the most prominent
being the Clean
Energy Plan released during the 2007 federal election campaign.
The Clean Energy Plan commits the ALP to
implementing an emissions trading scheme
by 2010, reducing greenhouse gas emissions
by 60 per cent of 2000 levels by 2050
and increasing Australia’s renewable
energy target to 20 per cent by 2020.
Financial
incentives, such as rebates and low
interest loans for households to adopt energy
and water saving measures have also been
outlined.
Labor's policies also support the creation
of a number of funds to help finance Australia’s
response to climate change, including:
During the 2007 election campaign the ALP also committed
to signing and ratifying the Kyoto Protocol.
Since forming government on the 3 December
2007, the ALP has had the task of implementing
these policies.

THE LIBERAL–NATIONALS
COALITION
On 29 July 2008 the federal Coalition
held a shadow
cabinet meeting that endorsed a new
climate change policy. The Coalition policy
now gives in principle support to the implementation
of an emissions trading scheme. The Coalition
believes that the design detail of an Australian
emissions trading scheme should be informed
by the outcome of the 2009 Copenhagen Climate
Conference and has no firm commitment for
a trading scheme start date.
