They are the first delegation from the 275-member Iraq Council of Representatives to officially visit Australia since the end of the Saddam Hussein regime in 2003 and the establishment of the new democratically-elected parliament in 2006.

This visit is being sponsored by AusAID under its ‘Iraq – Supporting Public Sector Governance’ program.

The seven men and one woman are members of the Iraq Council of Representatives and also sit on a range of parliamentary committees important to the rebuilding of Iraq.

Among the visiting parliamentarians are the First Deputy Speaker Mr Khalid Al-Attiya, Second Deputy Speaker Mr A’rif Tayfor and also several chairs of committees. The Chair of the Oil and Gas Committee Mr Ali Hussein will join the Chair of the Economy, Reconstruction and Investment Committee Dr Haider Abadi and the Chair of the Governorate and Regions Committee Mr Hashim Yahya Al-Taee on the visit to Australia. Members of the Finance Committee and the Martyrs, Victims and Political Prisoners Committee are also in this delegation.

The Iraqi parliamentarians will attend Question Time in the House of Representatives at 2pm on Wednesday 3 December and then Question Time in the Senate at 2:30pm. Besides meetings with the Speaker of the House of Representatives Harry Jenkins and the Senate President Senator John Hogg, the Iraqi MPs will also share their experiences with a minister, parliamentary secretary and range of committee chairs on Thursday 4 December.
