New Members First Speeches Concluded
Perhaps the most daunting aspect in the life of a new Member is now over for the 21 new members of the House of Representatives - the presentation of a Member's First Speech. Topics may vary, but First Speeches are always of interest, and offer an insight into Members the public don't often see.
First Speeches (formerly Maiden Speeches) are granted to all new Members to thank their supporters, to speak of their electorates, and to outline their interests and opinions on issues of their choice. They also quite often include more personal information about Members as they tell the House of their life before Parliament. Each Member is allocated 20 minutes to give their First Speech, and it is something that is always of great interest to a Member's family, friends, and colleagues.

The Member for Wentworth, Mr Malcolm Turnbull MP makes his First Speech
Whilst there were 22 new Members elected to the 41st Parliament, there are only 21 First Speeches, as Mr Russell Broadbent MP (McMillan) has twice previously been elected to the House of Representatives, firstly in 1990 (where he made his First Speech) before being defeated at the 1993 general election, and secondly in 1996, before being defeated in the 1998 general election.
