Invitation to form a government

The Governor-General, His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery, received advice from the Prime Minister, The Hon John Howard MP, that following the recent election on 24 November 2007 he should invite the Leader of the Opposistion, Mr Kevin Rudd MP, to form a Government.

In accordance with past practice, the Governor-General has requested Mr Howard and his Ministers to remain in Government in caretaker capacity until a new Government is sworn in.

Afterwards, the Governor-General telephoned Mr Kevin Rudd MP and invited him to form a Government.

Mr Rudd has accepted the invitation and advised the Governor-General that he would inform him when the stage had been reached where the new Ministry could be sworn in by the Governor-General.
