Committee establishment, role and history

The standing committee is one of twelve general purpose investigatory committees established by the House of Representatives of the Parliament of Australia. The Committee was established at the commencement of the 42nd Parliament on 12 February 2008.

Information on the establishment, role and powers of House of Representatives committees can be found in chapters 16 and 17 of the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives.

In summary, the role of the Standing Committee on Employment and Workplace Relations is to carry out inquiries into matters referred to it by the House of Representatives or a Minister of the Commonwealth Government. The matters that may be referred by the House include reports by the Commonwealth Auditor-General. The Committee could also inquire into matters raised in annual reports of Commonwealth Government departments and authorities.

The committee has been known in previous parliaments by the following names:

  • 2004-2007 Standing Committee on Employment, Workplace Relations and Workforce Participation

  • 1998-2001 – Standing Committee on Employment, Education and Workplace Relations

  • 1987-1998 – Standing Committee on Employment, Education and Training

  • 1987-1989 – Standing Committee on Education, Employment and Training
