Committee establishment, role and history
The standing committee is one of twelve general purpose investigatory committees
established by the House of Representatives of the Parliament of Australia.

In summary, the role of the Standing Committee on Communications is to carry out inquiries into matters referred to it by the House of Representatives or a Minister of the Commonwealth Government. The Committee can also inquire into matters raised in annual reports of Commonwealth Government departments and authorities and into reports of the Commonwealth Auditor-General.
The Committee has had the following name changes in previous Parliaments:
- 2001-07 Standing Committee on Communications, Information Technology and the Arts
- 1998-01 Standing Committee on Communications, Transport and the Arts
- 1996-98 Standing Committee on Communications, Transport and Microeconomic Reform
- 1987-96 Standing Committee on Transport, Communications and Infrastructure.
