Annual Report 2004–05

Management of information systems

The department’s financial information management system, Finance One, has been operating effectively since its implementation in January 2004. The system plays an important role in the department’s cash management, funds control, payments and receipts and statutory reporting requirements. Finance One and its surrounding accounting and business processes are continually being improved through the adoption of better practice recommendations and efficiency enhancements in key areas.

Following a review of human resource management information systems currently used in Parliament House, it was decided to change from the department’s current system (PeopleSoft) to CHRIS, commencing from the first pay in July 2005. Steps to prepare for the changeover of systems were carried out jointly with the Department of the House of Representatives. Once the payroll function is fully operational, other modules in the information system, such as recruitment, occupational health and safety and performance management, will be utilised. It is expected that these modules will result in efficiencies in administrative processing and provide improved reporting details.
