Annual Report 2003–04

About this report

The Department of the Senate supports the operations of the Australian Senate and its committees, and promotes public understanding of the role of the Senate.

This is our annual report for the 2003–04 financial year. We have structured the report into five main parts.

In the overview section, Harry Evans (Clerk of the Senate and our chief executive) reviews developments during the year, and we describe the structure and functions of our department.

Our report on performance examines our activities against the performance indicators of our individual output groups.

The report on management and accountability takes a close look at corporate governance, external scrutiny, human resources management, purchasing and assets.

The audited financial statements show how we managed our assets and income.

Appendices to the report contain additional information that the law requires us to report, and details about staffing, publications and public information activities.

We have also included a glossary of terms, an index of compulsory information, a general alphabetical index, and a special index for people and groups with particular interests (citizens, politicians, researchers, educators, other legislative organisations and the media).

This report is presented for tabling in the Senate pursuant to section 65 of the Parliamentary Service Act 1999. It is also produced to meet the information needs of interested parties, including:

  • individual senators and their staff
  • staff of the Senate and other Commonwealth parliamentary departments
  • other legislative institutions
  • executive government agencies
  • journalists
  • members of the public.
