Inquiry into the Native Title Amendment (Technical Amendments) Bill 2007

Information about the Inquiry

On 29 March 2007, the Senate referred the provisions of the above Bill to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee for inquiry and report by 8 May 2007. The Bill amends provisions of the Native Title Act 1993 (the Act) relating to:

  • future acts;
  • Indigenous land use agreements;
  • the scope of alternative state or territory regimes to the right to negotiate established under section 43 of the Act;
  • the making and resolution of native title applications;
  • the obligations of the Registrar of the Native title Tribunal in relation to the registration of native title applications;
  • native title representative bodies; and
  • prescribed bodies corporate.

Lodging Submissions

Submissions are called for by 20 April 2007. Submissions become Committee documents and are only made public after a decision by the Committee. Unauthorised release of submissions is not covered by parliamentary privilege. Further assistance can be obtained by phoning the secretariat on (02) 6277 3560.
