Inquiry into the Law and Justice (Cross Border and Other Amendments) Bill 2009

Information about the Inquiry

On 19 March 2009, the Senate referred to this Committee the Law and Justice (Cross Border and Other Amendments) Bill 2009 for inquiry and report by 7 May 2009.

This Bill aims to facilitate the operation between Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory of a state and territory-based scheme to allow police and judicial officers to deal with offenders from other jurisdictions. The Bill would also explicitly recognise the ability of a prisoner in a state or territory to provide evidence by electronic means in another jurisdiction, and also amends the Evidence and Procedure (New Zealand) Act 1994 to extend the existing arrangements for the service of subpoenas between Australia and New Zealand in certain family law proceedings.
