Subject: Senate Enquiry into
the Migration Legislation Amendment
The Secretary
Senate Legal and Constitutional References
Committee
Suite S1.108
Parliament House
Canberra ACT 2600
24 July 2002
Sir
I write regarding the Senate Inequiry into the
Migration Legislation Amendment (Further Border Protection Measures) Bill
2002
I have grave concerns regarding this bill and
the implications for this country should the Senate pass this Bill.
I doubt the legislation is consistent with
Australia's international obligations and that it would contraveneInternational
Law to which Australia is a signatory.
The purpose of thsi legislation appears to be to
deter refugees or asyslum seekers from entering Australia. I find this
abhorrent. People do not risk all they possess or the lvies of their
families unless they are desperate.
I beg you not to pass this Bill as it is in contravention of
accepted standards of obligation to fellow human beings. Let Australia
continue to show compassion.
Yours faithfully
Charlotte Brewer
