Senate Select Committee on Regional and Remote Indigenous Communities
Inquiry Process
The select committee is due to report twice each year
over the current parliament.
Submissions are invited for the first of part of the
inquiry which is to be reported on by 30 September. Those who wish to make
submissions should take into account that the committee's terms of reference
are very broad and cover a range of subjects. These include Commonwealth
government policies that are specific to the Northern Territory, the effects
of state and territory policies across Australia, issues for children and
the involvement of the Commonwealth, states and territories in Indigenous
communities. The committee hopes the following comments will be helpful.
In regard to its first report, the committee is
interested in knowing about the most pressing and urgent needs of Indigenous
communities across the differing areas covered within the terms of
reference. The committee will be influenced by informed opinion about the
priorities it should set itself in dealing with these terms of reference. It
is likely that the first report will reflect the wide-ranging concerns of
the Indigenous community and other interested parties. It will also set out
a program for more specific issues to be dealt with in future reports.
The select committee should be used for raising
concerns in the public domain about government policy variously at the
Commonwealth, state and territory level and its implementation across the
range of services affecting Indigenous people. Submitters may comment upon
any or all of the terms of reference and should set out their information
and their viewpoints for the purpose of identifying those issues and
problems which the committee needs to address in meeting its reporting
tasks. These may include quite specific administrative issues, be either
local or national issues, and relate to policy and implementation at all
levels of government.
The select committee looks forward to receiving your
responses, which need only be brief, and to visits which the
committee intends making to regional and remote Indigenous communities. These visits will be organised partly on the basis of written
submissions we receive and also to ensure that communities with different
demographics are included.
