Inquiry into Academic Freedom

Information about the Inquiry

The Senate has referred to its Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Committee an inquiry into academic freedom in schools, universities and other higher education institutes. The committee was due to report by 11 November 2008. This has been extended to 4 December 2008.

The terms of reference include consideration of intellectual diversity, indication of ideological, political or cultural prejudice in regard to teaching content and conduct. The committee has also been asked to consider the need for a charter of academic freedoms.

Submissions for this inquiry close on 15 August 2008.
