Non-proliferation Legislation Amendment Bill 2006

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade is inquiring into the above bill. The purpose of the bill is to:

  • implement new requirements of the amendments to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material;
  • regulate, with respect to nuclear safeguards, the decommissioning of a nuclear facility to ensure that Australia is able to meet its international obligations to the International Atomic Energy Agency; and
  • make penalties for the most serious offences consistent with penalties under comparable Commonwealth non-proliferation legislation.

The committee invites submissions from people or organisations interested in Australia's non-proliferation arrangements as they relate to this bill. The committee is due to report by 8 February 2007. Written submissions should be lodged by 17 January 2007 and addressed to:

The Committee prefers submissions to be in electronic form on disc or e–mailed (fadt.sen@aph.gov.au). Alternatively, submissions may be faxed (02 6277 5818) or posted. For enquiries or information about making submissions, phone: 02 6277 3535. Submissions become committee documents and are only made public after a decision by the Committee. Persons making submissions should not release them without the approval of the Committee. Submissions are covered by parliamentary privilege but their unauthorised release is not.

The committee prefers to make submissions public and to publish them on the committee's website. If you would like the submission or parts of the submission kept confidential could you please clearly indicate your concerns. Some submitters may be invited to give evidence at public hearings.
