Review of the declaration of Jabhat al-Nusra as a declared terrorist organisation under the Australian Citizenship Act 2007

On 9 August 2017 the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security commenced a review of the Immigration Minister's declaration of Jabhat al-Nusra as a declared terrorist organisation under the Australian Citizenship Act 2007.

Section 35 of the Australian Citizenship Act 2007 provides for the Immigration Minister to declare a listed terrorist organisation (under the Criminal Code) to be a 'declared terrorist organisation' under the Citizenship Act. The Committee may review this declaration and report its comments and recommendations to the Parliament before the end of the disallowance period. The disallowance period is 15 sitting days from the day the regulation is tabled.

On 16 October 2017 the Committee tabled its report Review of the declaration of Jabhat al-Nusra as a terrorist organisation under the Australian Citizenship Act 2007.
