Family Law Legislation Amendment (Family Violence and Other Measures) Bill 2011

1.1                   On Wednesday 11 May 2011 the Selection Committee report referred to the House of Representatives Social Policy and Legal Affairs Committee for inquiry the Family Law Legislation Amendment (Family Violence and Other Measures) Bill 2011.

1.2                   The Committee met on Thursday 12 May to discuss the referral. The Committee notes that the Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs is currently conducting an inquiry into this Bill. The Senate Committee is holding public hearings and has received 202 submissions to date. The Senate Committee is due to report by 23 June 2011.

1.3                   The Committee supports the public consultation process that is being undertaken by the Senate. The Committee does not consider that it could significantly add to the work already begin undertaken and notes that duplication is likely from a further inquiry.

1.4                   In light of this, the Committee has unanimously agreed not to further inquire into this Bill.
