  • Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2008–committee of the whole continued–6 Government and 2 Opposition amendments agreed to [The House of Representatives will now consider the amendments made by the Senate–see Journals entries nos 4 and 31 ]
  • Trade Practices Amendment (Clarity in Pricing) Bill 2008 [This bill will now be assented to]

A notice of motion was given to schedule estimates hearings for 2009.

New inquiry

The Senate referred matters relating to the impact of gene patentson the provision of healthcare in Australia to the Community Affairs Committee to report by the last sitting day of 2009.

Public meetings

The Senate authorised various committees to hold public meetings during the sitting of the Senate [see Journals entries nos 14, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 22].

Reporting dates extended

The Senate extended reporting dates for the following inquiries:

  • Matters relating to the gas explosion at Varanus Island, Western Australia –Economics Committee–to report by 3 December 2008
  • Protecting Children from Junk Food Advertising ( Broadcasting Amendment) Bill 2008–Community Affairs Committee–to report by 2 December 2008

Membership

The Senate agreed to various changes to committee membership.

Messages from the House of Representatives were reported advising of various appointments to joint committees.

Death of former member

The President informed the Senate of the death on 25 October 2008 of Cecil Allen Blanchard , a former member of the House of Representatives for the division of Moore , Western Australia , from 1983 to 1990.
