Notice of motion to vary the hours of meeting and consider bills under a limitation of time

A notice of motion was given by the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Senator Ludwig) to vary the hours of meeting for 19 and 20 September and 11 October 2011 to enable the Government’s legislative program to be considered, and to consider bills under a limitation of time.

New committee

The Senate debated and concurred with a resolution of the House of Representatives establishing a Joint Select Committee on Australia’s Clean Energy Future Legislation [first speaker].

Meetings during the sitting of the Senate

The Senate authorised the following meetings to be held while the Senate is sitting:

  • Gambling Reform Joint Select Committee–20 September 2011 from 4.00 pm–private meeting otherwise than in accordance with standing order 33(1)
  • Rural Affairs and Transport References Committee–14 September 2011 from 4.30 pm–Live export trade, together with the Live Animal Export (Slaughter) Prohibition Bill 2011 [No. 2] and the Live Animal Export Restriction and Prohibition Bill 2011 [No. 2]–public meeting

Reporting date extended

The Senate extended the reporting date for the inquiry of the Community Affairs References Committee into the funding and administration of mental health services to 20 October 2011.

The Senate agreed to the following changes to committee membership:

  • Australia’s Clean Energy Future Legislation Joint Select Committee–Senators Birmingham, Cormann, Milne, Pratt and Urquhart appointed
  • Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Legislation Committee–Senator Sterle to replace Senator Stephens for the period 18 to 21 October 2011

Notice of motion to disallow given

The Leader of the Opposition in the Senate (Senator Abetz) gave a notice of motion to disallow the Fair Work (Transitional Provisions and Consequential Amendments) Amendment Regulations 2011 (No. 1), as contained in Select Legislative Instrument 2011 No. 144 and made under the Fair Work (Transitional Provisions and Consequential Amendments) Act 2009 [homepage].

Death of former member

The Deputy President (Senator Parry) informed the Senate of the death, on 13 September 2011, of the Honourable David Francis Jull, a former minister and member of the House of Representatives for the divisions of Bowman and Fadden from 1975 to 2007. A motion moved by the Leader of the Government in the Senate (Senator Evans) was carried [first speaker].
