The Senate met from 10.49 am until 5.00 pm

New Zealand Earthquake

At the request of an absolute majority of senators [see standing order 55(2) ] the President summoned the Senate to meet at 10.49 am to enable senators to observe 2 minutes’ silence as a mark of respect to the victims of the New Zealand earthquake.

Death of Sapper Jamie Ronald Larcombe

The Leader of the Government in the Senate (Senator Evans) moved that the Senate records its deep sorrow at the death, on 19 February 2011, of Sapper Jamie Ronald Larcombe while on combat operations in Afghanistan. The motion was supported [first speaker].

Statement by President

The President made a statement relating to procedures during debate on a censure motion on 28 February 2011. A motion moved by the Leader of the Australian Greens (Senator Bob Brown) to take note of the statement was debated and agreed to [first speaker].
