Notice of motion given
A notice of motion was given by the Chair of the Standing
Committee on Regulations and Ordinances to disallow the
Broadcasting Services (Anti-Terrorism Requirements for Open
Narrowcasting Television Services) Standard 2006, made under
subsection 125(2) of the Broadcasting Services Act
1992

Report on restructuring the committee
system
The Chairman of the Procedure Committee
tabled a report on a proposal to restructure the Senate committee
system. The committee examined the practicability of the proposal
and amendments to standing orders required to give it
effect.
Features of the proposed system include:
- establishing eight standing committees (combining the functions
of the 16 legislation and references committees) with eight
members each instead of six;
- a government senator to chair each standing committee, with a
non-government senator as deputy chair;
- more flexible arrangements to appoint substitute members of
committees.
This report will be considered by the Senate on Monday, 14
August.
