New senators sworn in
Certificates of election for
senators elected on 9 October 2004 to serve in the Senate from
1 July 2005 were tabled. The senators made and subscribed the oath
or affirmation of allegiance.
Election of officers
Senators Calvert
(Lib., Tas.) and Nettle
(AG, NSW) were both proposed to take the office of President of the
Senate. Senator Calvert was declared elected after a
ballot was held (Senator Calvert 67, and Senator Nettle 7
votes).
Senators Hogg
(ALP, Qld) and Milne
(AG, Tas.) were both proposed to take the office of Deputy
President of the Senate and Chair of Committees. Senator Hogg was
declared elected after a
ballot was held (Senator Hogg 70, and Senator Milne 4
votes).
Ministry and ministerial arrangements
The Leader of the Government in the Senate advised the Senate of
changes to the Howard Ministry and
ministerial arrangements in the Senate.
Other party arrangements
The Leaders in the Senate of the
Opposition,
The Nationals,
Australian Democrats,
Australian Greens, and the
Family First Party advised the Senate of various party
appointments
