What is a bill?

A bill is a proposal for a law or a change to an existing law. A bill becomes law (an Act) when agreed to in identical form by both houses of Parliament and assented to by the Governor-General.

    Introduced with the National Cancer Screening Register (Consequential and Transitional Provisions) Bill 2016, the bill: establishes the National Cancer Screening Register, a national electronic infrastructure for the collection, storage, analysis and reporting of cancer screen program data for the National Cervical Screening Program and the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program; authorises the collection, use and disclosure of information for the purposes of the register and creates an offence for the unauthorised disclosure of information; and mandates reporting of screening information to the register.
