    to: establish the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) as an independent statutory agency within the Defence portfolio reporting directly to the Minister for Defence; amend ASD’s functions to include providing material, advice and other assistance to prescribed persons or bodies, and preventing and disrupting cybercrime; require the Director-General of ASD to brief the Leader of the Opposition about matters relating to ASD; and give the Director-General powers to employ persons as employees of ASD; and 18 Acts to make consequential amendments.

    to: allow the Australian Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS) to provide for the protection of its staff members and agents, including the provision of self-defence training and weapons for use outside Australia under strict conditions, such as reporting to the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security on the discharge of any such weapons; and allow ASIS to accept protection from other agencies, including armed protection in certain circumstances. Also contains an application provision.

    Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Act 1979
    to: provide a consistent meaning of foreign intelligence and consistent approach to foreign intelligence with the
    Intelligence Services Act 2001
    and the
    Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act 1979
    ; clarify that a computer access warrant authorises access to data held in the target computer at any time while the warrant is in force; and exclude the communication of information relating to employment within the Australian intelligence community from the operation of security assessment provisions;
    Criminal Code Act 1995
    to clarify that the immunity for liability for certain employees for computer-related activities cannot be overridden by other Commonwealth, state or territory laws; and
    Intelligence Services Act 2001
    to: provide a specific function for the Defence Imagery and Geospatial Organisation to assist the defence force; provide a new ground for granting a ministerial authorisation for producing intelligence on a person; clarify that the immunity for liability for certain employees for computer-related activities cannot be overridden by other Commonwealth, state or territory laws; and move existing exemptions from the Legislative Instruments Regulations 2004 into the Act.
