Index to Parliamentary Papers (1992-)

Search the Index to Parliamentary Papers

Parliamentary papers are documents and papers tabled in the Commonwealth Parliament. There are two types:

  • The Parliamentary Papers Series consists of reports, returns and statements from departments, authorities, parliamentary and ad hoc committees of inquiry and royal commissions and the like which have been presented to the Parliament and considered appropriate for inclusion. Also included in the series are any other papers of an ad hoc nature, including ministerial statements and petitions, which either House has ordered to be printed. Documents in this series bear a Parliamentary Paper Number (eg 42/99) and are available for those outside Parliament from the National Library of Australia and State Libraries.
  • Documents presented to Parliament which are not ordered to be printed. Whilst these are parliamentary papers, they do not form part of the Parliamentary Papers Series. They are, however, provided by the author agencies to the National Library of Australia under the legal deposit provisions of the Copyright Act 1968 and to State and university libraries under the Library Deposit Scheme .

The custody of all documents laid before Parliament, printed and not printed, is invested in the Clerks of the Senate and House of Representatives. All papers and documents presented to Parliament are considered to be public and, by arrangement, may be inspected at the offices of the Clerks.

This index compiled by the Parliamentary Library starts in 1992 and covers the Parliamentary Papers Series and a selection of documents presented to Parliament but not printed.

The Daily Papers List Number which appears in each entry is relevant only for Parliamentary Library staff. If an item has only a Daily Papers List Number it is a paper tabled but not printed and will be found alongside the bound Parliamentary Papers Series for each year. If an item has both a Parliamentary Paper Number and a Daily Papers List Number, just use the former as it supersedes the latter.

For further information and lists of documents (by year) included in the Parliamentary Papers series see the Joint Committee on Publications page
