Mr Harry Jenkins  MP, Speaker of the House of Representatives

Mr Harry Jenkins is the 28th Speaker of the House. He has been a Member of Parliament since 1986 representing the Victorian electorate of Scullin, having won the seat following the resignation of his father, the Hon Dr HA Jenkins. Mr Jenkins was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives on 12 February 2008.

Mr Jenkins has served on a number of Parliamentary Committees and was Deputy Chair of Committees from 8.5.90 to 8.2.93. He was Deputy Speaker from 4.5.93 to 29.1.96 and Second Deputy Speaker from 30.4.96 to 15.10.07.

Mr Jenkins has represented the Parliament on a number of delegations and conferences.

Prior to entering Parliament, Mr Jenkins served in Local Government as an elected Councillor of the Whittlesea Shire Council from 1979-86. He was President of Whittlesea Shire Council from 1984-85.

Before entering the Commonwealth Parliament, Mr Jenkins was a Public Servant. He has a BSc from the Australian National University (ANU).

The Speaker is the principal office holder in the House of Representatives. In addition to basic work as a Member, the Speaker presides at meetings of the House, represents the Chamber in dealings with Government and with other authorities, and in conjunction with the President of the Senate, oversees the Parliament's administration.
