Tips on reducing water

Water

Irrigating the landscape uses the most water consumed at Parliament House. However, since Stage 3 Water Restrictions were introduced this usage has decreased dramatically. Other main uses of water at Parliament House are the kitchens, bathrooms and air-conditioning systems.

Information on saving water in the landscape, including drought tolerant grass trials is available here: http://www.aph.gov.au/visitors/landscapetrials.htm

Stage 3 Water Restrictions are currently in place in the ACT. Although Parliament House is located on Commonwealth Land, DPS has adopted these as its water reduction targets.

Performance

A network of meters monitor water used for specific purposes. Total water use is compared against a target of 35% reduction of normal use (eg water use before the introduction of Stage 3 Water Restrictions during December 2006).

Comment on performance:
Ongoing implementation of Stage 3 water restriction requirements meant that Parliament House water consumption remained below target.

Objectives and targets

DPS has formally set objectives for managing water use in the DPS Water Strategic Plan 2007-2010.

The plan aims to reduce water consumption in the building and the Parliamentary precincts with the overall outcomes of reducing water costs, minimising our impact on the environment and complying with legal and community obligations.

Tips on saving water

If you work or are visiting Parliament House, then one way you can help save water at Parliament House is to report any leaks or water wastage you observe (contact your relevant office support services or Visitor Services front desk if you are a visitor).

In locations where these facilities are available, then please:

  • use automatic sensor hand wash basins;

  • choose the half-flush toilet button; and

  • take shorter showers.

ACTEW has a website that details other ways to save water: Save Water for Life.
